State Representative Erika White (D-Springfield Township) has welcomed the signing of a bipartisan bill that designates March 9 as 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion Day in Ohio. The legislation, Senate Bill 17, is a companion to House Bill 204, which was sponsored by Representatives White and Melanie Miller (R-Ashland).
The new law recognizes the contributions of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a unit composed of 855 women led by Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams from Ohio. This battalion played a significant role during World War II.
“Today we have not re-written history but restored the footsteps that the 855 women of the 6888th Battalion, led by Ohioan Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams, have left as an indelible path for all women. Designating March 9th to honor these trailblazing women and their impact on American history in the state of Ohio is a victory for the state, and for women,” said Rep. White.
For many years, official recognition of the battalion’s service was lacking. The establishment of this commemorative day aims to correct that oversight and formally acknowledge their military contributions.
“Honoring the 6888th Battalion strengthens Ohio’s legacy of service,” Rep. White added. “It reminds us that when we recognize every contribution with equal respect, we build a more honest history and a stronger future for those who will serve next.”
With this action, Ohio seeks to ensure that dedication and impact are recognized regardless of role, race, or gender. The state intends for this recognition to preserve the legacy of the battalion as part of its history for future generations.
