State Representative Jean Schmidt of Loveland has introduced House Bill 89, which aims to freeze property taxes at their 2022 levels. The proposal was presented to the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

House Bill 89 seeks to provide temporary relief for Ohio homeowners by halting any increase in property taxes while the Ohio General Assembly works towards a more permanent solution to address rising property tax rates.

“This bill will provide immediate relief to Ohio’s homeowners who have faced an unprecedented hike in property valuations,” said Schmidt. “By considering this legislation, we are communicating to our constituents that we are taking their struggles seriously and actively working to create lasting change.”

The initiative comes as a response to increasing property taxes across the state. In Clermont County, where Schmidt resides, there was a notable 43% rise in property valuations in 2023.

The proposed legislation is currently awaiting further deliberation from the House Ways and Means Committee.
