The Ohio House of Representatives has voted to override Governor DeWine's recent veto of House Bill 68, according to State Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland). Schmidt, in a statement, expressed her support for the override and explained the importance of the legislation.
"Today, I voted to protect our children and female student athletes by overriding the Governor's veto of House Bill 68," Schmidt said. House Bill 68 is a combination of the Save Adolescents from Experimentation Act (SAFE) and the Save Women's Sports Act. Schmidt emphasized the need for children to go through puberty before undergoing gender-affirming medical interventions.
"I strongly believe that children should go through puberty before any gender-affirming drug or surgery is done," Schmidt stated. She also highlighted the importance of preserving the integrity of women's sports and ensuring that female athletes do not have to compete against men.
Schmidt commended her colleagues for their swift action in passing this critical legislation. "I applaud my colleagues for acting swiftly to ensure this critical legislation becomes law in Ohio," she said.
The veto override will now proceed to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
