State Representatives Adam Mathews and Jean Schmidt convened a press conference in Columbus to discuss upcoming bipartisan legislation aimed at prohibiting the use of state funds for ending lives in Ohio. The proposed bill seeks to abolish the death penalty, ban state funding for assisted suicide, and reinforce the prohibition against using state funds for abortion.

The bill is unique in its approach by linking each issue with a non-severability clause, emphasizing a unified stance on life preservation. During the press conference, Schmidt stated, “This ‘first of its kind’ legislation will protect state dollars, and more importantly, human life.” She further elaborated on the necessity of opposing state funding for abortion, the death penalty, and assisted suicide to remain consistent with pro-life principles.

Mathews described the initiative as transformative legislation that heralds a new era of fiscal and moral conservatism. He remarked, “This is more than just policy; this is about the affirmation that where there is human life, there is dignity and hope.”

The event saw participation from several notable figures including State Senator Steve Huffman, Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, Senate Assistant Minority Leader Hearcel Craig, Executive Director of the Catholic Conference of Ohio Brian Hickey, and Founder of Run the Race Club Rachel Muha.
