State Representatives Jean Schmidt and Adam Mathews recently presented sponsor testimony to the House Judiciary Committee regarding House Bill 72. This proposed legislation seeks to eliminate state-funded death in Ohio by abolishing the death penalty, prohibiting state funds for assisted suicide, and reinforcing the ban on using state funds for abortion.

Jean Schmidt stated, "It is time for Ohio to not just be fiscally responsible, but morally responsible and committed to the dignity of every human life at every stage by prohibiting state funded death." Adam Mathews added, "Our state should focus its taxpayer spending on upholding a consistent ethic of life. By prohibiting public funds from being used with the intention to terminate human life, this legislation sends a clear and uncompromising message: Ohio will not fund death."

The bill includes a non-severability clause that connects each issue, highlighting a unified purpose to uphold life's sanctity and prohibit all forms of state-funded death. House Bill 72 is currently under review by the House Judiciary Committee.
